i agree with this
Hindi need ng Pilipinas ang barko para maprotektahan ang bansa, we are the iron curtain against China. China can't project its Navy kasi nga nasa first island chain tayo, and it fully encloses their shores along with Taiwan and Japan. It's just the same scenario with the Black Sea.I think we can learn lessons from Ukraine, pero it's comparing apples to oranges. Army and land based ang defenses ng Ukraine kasi maliit na part lang nila ang coastline, tapos halos closed pa ang waters ng Black Sea kaya hindi masyadong nagmamatter and navy. Literal na nagcross lang ng border ang Russia to get to Ukraine.
Meanwhile we are surrounded by waters and our primary antagonist has a large navy. They need to cross waters before getting to us. We need more hulls to project power and patrol our seas. Step in the right direction ang acquisition ng corvettes and frigates but due to budget restraints, hindi pa complete ang armaments nila (some have only guns, others already have anti-ship missiles).
An ocean going navy is a good deterrent and can both be used as air and surface defense. But of course it would only work as a part of a whole.
Yes they are cheaper but how can they protect against a blockade just outside their range? The PH, despite being an "agricultural country" imports a lot of grain and foodstuff. If the PLAN decides to blockade our ports just outside missile range, what do we do without ships or fighter bombers? It's cheaper to buy and maintain land based Air Defense system and Anti ship missiles.
If the biggest threat are long range missiles and submarines, what's the point of buying AShM?The biggest threat China poses is its Long Range Missiles and its Submarines.
No that's not how an MRF works. An MRF is a fighter first, the other roles are secondary, but MRFs can carry AAMs, AGMs, AShMs, precision guided weapons, dumb bombs. They can intercept the enemy long before they can get within land based missile range. Also buying Multi Role Fighter aircraft is only good for COIN operations or internal defense not against fighting China.
Indeed ph needs to modernize its navy tooThe Philippines is trying to procure so many things at once, when they should've focused on defensively. I think the Army should have been the biggest priority, giving them more SAMs and Manpads to deny the skies, more TOW and anti ship missiles and the most important of all, drones. The Naval upgrades and Airforce maybe necessary, but it is costly, and having seen the war in Ukraine which is mostly characterized by drones and Artillery duels says a lot.
Russia's Airforce is struggling to maintain air superiority because of Manpads, SPAAGs, and SAMs and its Navy having a no show and losing many ships. I do like to see Landing Platform Docks to give the military mobility in defending the islands, since it can carry more weight than a plane and the geography of the Philippines is in its advantage.
I think, the Philippines should focus on Drones, loitering munitions, Manpads and SAMs, Artillery and TOWs or ATGMs. I feel like they are more cost effective than buying a jet or a warship.
