No, not really. It's a popularity contest and name recognition still has a strong grip among voters' choice of candidates. A lot of them seem to not be interested in platforms and just stick to strong marketing tactics that don't really showcase what the candidate plans to do. Biggest offender of this is Revilla.

BBM won. That on itself answers your question. Madaming naniniwala sa mga ikinalat na kasinungalingan. jusme I even know people who believe that they'll get the infamous tallano gold because of him winning.

Picking the right politician is a challenging task that requires careful consideration of many factors such as personal qualities, track record, political platform, and so on. It's a complicated process that involves critical thinking and informed decision-making.

In the case of the Philippines, there could be several reasons why some voters may not be good at picking politicians, including:

  1. Limited Education: While the Philippines have a high literacy rate, there is still a substantial number of individuals who are not adequately educated. This leads to limited political awareness, thus making it difficult for them to make informed choices at the ballots.
  2. Political Corruption: Political corruption is a pervasive problem in the Philippines, where some politicians are more concerned with personal gain than serving the public interest. This kind of environment can lead to voter disillusionment, making it difficult for them to distinguish between honest and corrupt politicians.
  3. Poverty: One of the biggest challenges facing the Philippines is poverty. Many people in the country struggle to make ends meet, which can lead to desperation for change and a willingness to believe empty promises of prosperity from politicians. This can make it difficult for them to make objective decisions when voting.
  4. Tribalism and Regionalism: Social factors such as tribalism and regionalism can also play a role in the process of politician selection in the Philippines. Voters may be more inclined to support politicians who belong to the same ethnicity or region, regardless of their merit.
Overall, picking a good politician is not an easy task, and there are many challenging factors that can affect the process. It's important that voters in the Philippines strive to educate themselves about the candidates and their platforms, so they can make informed decisions when they go to the ballots.

Malubha talaga yung brain drain dito sa Pilipinas, which only worsens our development potential.

Good analysis.

Let me add na sangkaterbang focus groups discussions and social surveys have confirmed na kahit naman sa sectors of the population na impoverished or may minimal formal education, napakaaspirational ng "values and attributes" na hinahanap ng mga tao sa kanilang iboboto sa halalan (mabuting lider, hindi abusado at kurap, etc).

However on actual voting day, all of those aspirations are thrown out the window in lieu of other mental considerations na obviously hindi aaminin ng mga tao sa interviews. First of all, malaki ang impact ng vote-buying and or repeated dole outs sa pagboto ng tao. Second, name recall is prevalent behavior across all sectors of the population (especially in senatorial elections) on election day.

Good analysis pare and I agree with that.
