Leica cameras are definitely niche. They don't perform "stellar on every level" -- there's a certain demographic (not necessarily rich, but to buy one, you have to be pretty loaded) that gravitate towards the combination of Leica's style of body creation, optics, and image processing (for digital). It's good for the people who like that certain combination of factors.
For tech enthusiasts, Sony is usually the better choice
