Anria Espiritu
On Monday afternoon, August 18, police in Calumpit, Bulacan arrested three suspects for the rape and murder of 26-year-old Anria Espiritu.
Jeepney drivers Ramil de Arca and Melvin Ulam were taken into custody, along with Elmer Joson--the jeepney driver who was among the last people to see Espiritu alive.
All three jeepney drivers denied the allegations against them, but police say they have two witnesses who claimed they saw the men transferring Espiritu to another vehicle.
Espiritu’s body was found naked from the waist down in a rice field.
A screwdriver, which may have been used to stab her multiple times, was found in the crime scene. A chain, which most likely used to choke Espiritu was also found near her body.
Espiritu was last seen at around 1 a.m. on Thursday, August 14 as she was heading home from a night out. Espiritu’s friends said she boarded a jeepney on her way home.
At first, only Joson, who showed up at Espiritu’s wake, was tagged as a possible suspect. But Joson alleged that Espiritu got off at Bagbag--and that was where he last saw her.
At the wake, Espiritu’s relatives noted that Joson had scratch marks all over his body and quickly told the police about their suspicions.
When Joson was brought in for questioning, his live-in partner, Delia Dionisia, claimed that it was she who scratched him. Dionisia also added that she was also in the jeepney.
Despite their denials, the three drivers are now facing charges.
Espritu will be buried on Saturday.
