Planning to go to japan within this or next year. Can you recommend me places to visit during that time? Would like to explore their culture and modern things.

Depends on the city you want to visit.
I was 10 times in Tokyo and one time in Osaka.
Can recommend Tokyo to experience the old and new things next to each other.
Negative side: It is really crowded and best to walk on weekdays. I visited on weekends only big outdoor places or made relaxing days.
If possible, visit at the matsuri times. They are a great thing to remember.
