Put down that expensive anti-ageing cream. To beat wrinkles what you really need to do is find out what foods cause premature ageing. And here we can help.
Banish these seven foods and drinks from your diet in order to protect yourself against dull and sagging skin.
Pick foods for youth (not bacon) (REX)
Bacon sandwiches
Is there anything better than waking up to the smell of bacon on a Saturday morning? Umm…Yes, a healthy glow. And you won’t get one of those if you eat bacon sandwiches. Why? Well, processed meats, like bacon, contain nitrates. Nitrates are a problem if you don’t want wrinkled skin because they cause inflammation, which ages you.
Chocolate
If you haven’t been put off chocolate for the sake of your waistline, perhaps you’ll cut back when you find out how sugar ages you. Without going into too much science jargon, a high-sugar diet damages proteins in your skin, including collagen and elastin. These two proteins help us to look young. When these proteins become damaged our skin becomes washed out, it sags and it may become wrinkled.
So, if you want to ward off ageing, curb your chocolate habit. Try to limit your intake of other high-sugar foods and drinks too.
Crisps
Crisps may seem like the perfect mid-afternoon, pick-me-up snack, but they’re not. Crisps are high in salt, which can cause all sorts of problems within your body.
For example, salt causes us to retain water. Fluid retention not only leads to bloating, but it also causes bags under the eyes. And as you know, bags can add years to your face. So, ditch the crisps and swap your mid-afternoon snack for something a little more nutritious.
Coffee
Can’t start your day without a strong cup of coffee? Well, if you really can’t do without your caffeine fix and you don’t want to look wrinkled, then you best keep hydrated. Coffee, like alcohol, acts as a diuretic, which basically means it makes you wee more. It therefore dehydrates you and this makes your skin look dull, prune-like and dry. Not a good look.
Pasta
Although wholemeal pasta can be good for you, according to WebMD, eating too much processed carbohydrates can age you. This is because processed carbs damage your skin’s collagen. When your collagen becomes depleted you are more likely to develop wrinkles.
BBQ food
It’s sad news for all the BBQ fans out there, but it turns out BBQs can make you age prematurely. Why? Well, when we cook our meat using dry heat (this includes barbequing) we produce more Advanced Glycation End products (also known as AGEs) in the foods we are cooking. AGEs speed up the ageing process. So, if you want youthful skin, skip the alfresco dining.
Cooking foods on the BBQ isn't the best idea for young-looking skin
Chips
A bag of chips on the seafront may sound appealing, but the trans fat within those chips are anything but. Trans fats are bad news for your body because they cause inflammation, which in turn ages you. Healthy fats on the other hand can do wonders for our skin. For example, try to eat plenty of foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as avocados, walnuts, tofu and salmon.
