Messi is a better goal scorer (better goals per games ratio, better playmaker (he creates more chances for his team mates and has many more assist), he's a better dribbler, better passer, better at free kicks. He has more Ballon d'Or titles, more league titles, more golden boots, and more player of the season awards when both playing in La Liga at the same time. 2 World Cup Golden Balls to 0. 11 goals/assists in World Cup knock out games, Ronaldo has 0.
To be in the GOAT debate you need to have performed in the World Cup at least once, and now that Messi has won it, the debate is officially over.
No player in history has more man of the match awards than Messi. Messi has 225 and Ronaldo has 125. 100 more man of the match awards is a ridiculous difference.
Messi is like ' Metroman'... God given talent from the beginning, had everything on a silver platter. Great team, great teammates right from beginning. barring a few losses, he's always had it easy for him. Sure, while he's the better among the two right now, all he's done is just use his god given talent and showcase it on the pitch wining trophies, nothing else.
Ronaldo on the other hand is like ' Megamind", truly a black sheep like he said in the interview. He had to claw through everything to reach where he's is now ( or was some time before) breaking all limits. The media has also not been kind to him and are always focused on him ready to pounce on his next mistake.
Like I said, Messi will always be the golden boy, the younger sibling who is always loved no matter what he does while Ronaldo is like the elder sibling, no matter what he does is not enough. same as Goku / Vegeta comparison.
