Here are some compelling reasons why you should choose the former over the latter.

Many prefer an SUV to a car because of the commanding view out of the cabin, better visibility to other motorists, offroad capabilities and the insanely long range you can travel on a full tank of diesel. These are all valid points for one opting for an SUV over other types of vehicles, but did you know that pick-up trucks are able to offer all these attributes but at a fraction of the cost?

Contrary to popular belief, SUVs and pick-up trucks of most manufacturers are based on the same platform but, because pick-up trucks are classified as light trucks, are exempt from several restrictions, which cars and SUVs have to comply with in order to be considered road worthy. As such, pick-trucks are considerably cheaper than their SUV brethern despite having the same performance ****entials and go-anywhere abilities that make that so appealing. But how do you know which to get? Well, as of late, there has been a steady increase in the availability of pick up trucks as even the Chinese have hopped on the bandwagon.

As of now, there are four main trucks that should be at the top of your list: Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Nissan Navara and the Isuzu D-Max. All four are sturdy workhorses, whichever one you pick depends on what you expect it to accomplish. If its bullet proof reliability you are after, the Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-Max are your best bet. They have been known to take tons of abuse but keep going like true troopers. Unlike the Isuzu, the Hilux offers a better ride quality, so keep that in mind if you expect to make frequent long distance trips.

If you want an all-rounder capable of functioning like a regular car while having the 4x4 capabilities of a Land Cruiser, the Ford Ranger will fit into your lifestyle nicely. Ford offers its latest pick up truck with two engine options. If your the sensible type, the 2.2-litre turbo diesel should suit you just fine, but those wanting sportscar-like acceleration are going to want their Ranger to be powered by Ford's fabled Wildtrack engine, the 3.2-litre turbo diesel.

Unlike its rivals, the Ranger offers good ergonomics, car-like infotainment system and neatly arranged switchgear. At no point will you ever feel like your driving a vehicle meant for farm life as not only is it stylish on the inside but the prominent front grille, distinct headlights and muscular looks make it one of the most appealing trucks you can buy today.

The Nissan Navara doesn't really stand out when compared to trucks like the Hilux or Ranger, that said, it does have it's place in the pick-up truck market. The Navara's 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine comes with a good serving of power, which allow it to power out of some pretty sticky situations. It's main selling point is its drivability. Though it lacks the driving dynamics of the Hilux, its still up there with the best of them giving it almost car-like manouevrability.

What you choose depends on how you want the vehicle to fit into your lifestyle. Though the safest bet is the Toyota Hilux, the other three on the list offer some pretty interesting features that make them just as appealing as the Toyota.
