REDWOOD CITY, California – Utah's Filipino-American Attorney General Sean Reyes said his office will take its fight against gay marriage to the US Supreme Court after a federal appeals court struck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Reyes' office said even though the 10th Circuit ruled against Utah, the state is pleased that it moved the issue one step closer to the Supreme Court.

The ruling marks the first time a federal appeals court has sided with advocates for marriage equality.

The 10th Circuit Court of Appeal’s ruling on Utah’s ban applies to all states within its jurisdiction, including Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

Same-sex marriages in those states will have to wait until the enforcement of the decision has been stayed, pending Reyes’ appeal.

Reyes also said he may seek a review of the decision from the full panel of judges in the 10th Circuit.
