Spock Asks Luke About the Force
Spock: There is another matter I find difficult to reconcile.
Luke: The Force?
Spock: Yes. You have repeatedly referred to it as the Force. What, precisely, is it?
Luke: It's an energy field. It surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together.
Spock: An energy field?
Luke: Yes.
Spock: Generated by what mechanism?
Luke: Life.
Spock: That is remarkably vague.
Luke: It's not exactly something you can put in a textbook.
Spock: Everything can be put in a textbook.
Luke: Not everything.
Spock: That is an assertion, not an argument.
Luke: The Force is something you feel. You learn to sense it, and eventually you can interact with it.
Spock: Telepathy?
Luke: Among other things.
Spock: Telekinesis?
Luke: Yes.
Spock: Precognition?
Luke: Sometimes.
Spock: Manipulation of another individual's behavior?
Luke: Yes.
Spock: And you consider this normal?
Luke: For a Jedi.
Spock: I see.
Luke: What's wrong?
Spock: Nothing. I am merely attempting to determine whether what you describe is a physical phenomenon, a form of consciousness, or a previously unidentified interaction between the two.
Luke: The Jedi don't really think about it that way.
Spock: That is apparent.
Luke: You don't believe in it?
Spock: Belief is unnecessary when evidence is available.
Luke: I've seen the Force move objects.
Spock: I am aware.
Luke: You've seen me use it.
Spock: Indeed.
Luke: And you still don't believe?
Spock: I do not believe in it.
Luke: Then what do you think it is?
Spock: A demonstrable phenomenon for which I currently lack an adequate scientific model.
Luke: So... you believe in it.
Spock: No.
Luke: Spock—
Spock: I accept its existence.
Luke: That's basically the same thing.
Spock: It is absolutely not the same thing.
Luke: You Vulcans really like semantics.
Spock: We prefer precision.
Luke: Can you feel the Force?
Spock: No.
Luke: Maybe you're blocking it.
Spock: Unlikely.
Luke: Why?
Spock: Because I have been trained to control my emotions.
Luke: That doesn't mean you're not connected to it.
Spock: An intriguing hypothesis.
Luke: You should try reaching out.
Spock: Very well.
Spock closes his eyes.
Spock: I sense nothing.
Luke: Give it time.
Spock: I sense... a disturbance.
Luke: Really?
Spock: Yes.
Luke: What is it?
Spock: You are standing on my foot.
Luke: ...Sorry.
Spock: Your apology is accepted.
Luke: Was that the Force?
Spock: No.
Luke: How do you know?
Spock: Because the Force apparently has better observational skills than you do.
Luke: ...
Spock: Fascinating.
