Spock Gives Luke a Tour of the Matter Replicator
Spock leads Luke through the corridors of the Enterprise.Luke: So this is your ship?
Spock: The USS Enterprise, yes.
Luke: It's impressive.
Spock: Thank you.
Luke: Where are we going?
Spock: I am going to demonstrate one of our more useful technologies.
They enter a small room.
Luke: What is this?
Spock: A matter replicator.
Luke: A what?
Spock: A device capable of converting energy into matter according to a predetermined molecular pattern.
Luke: You can make matter?
Spock: Correct.
Luke: Any matter?
Spock: Within certain limitations.
Luke: So you can make food?
Spock: Yes.
Luke: Water?
Spock: Yes.
Luke: Clothes?
Spock: Yes.
Luke: Weapons?
Spock: Technically, yes. However, security protocols restrict the replication of certain dangerous materials.
Luke: Can it make a lightsaber?
Spock: No.
Luke: Why?
Spock: Because I have not provided it with a molecular pattern for one.
Luke: So if you had the pattern, it could make one?
Spock: In principle.
Luke: That's incredible.
Spock: It is primarily a matter of engineering.
Luke: The Force can do something similar.
Spock: The Force can create matter?
Luke: No.
Spock: Then it cannot do something similar.
Luke: I mean, the Force can influence objects.
Spock: That is considerably different from reconstructing their molecular composition.
Luke: You really like making distinctions.
Spock: They are important distinctions.
Luke: What would you replicate if you could make absolutely anything?
Spock: A cup of tea.
Luke: That's it?
Spock: It is sufficient.
Luke: I'd make something more exciting.
Spock: Such as?
Luke: Blue milk.
Spock: What is blue milk?
Luke: Milk. It is blue.
Spock: That description raises additional questions rather than answering the original one.
Luke: It's good.
Spock: I will reserve judgment.
Luke: Can you replicate it?
Spock: If you provide a sufficiently accurate molecular pattern.
Luke: I don't know the molecular pattern.
Spock: Then you cannot have it replicated.
Luke: Can't you just scan it?
Spock: We could.
Luke: Then scan some.
Spock: From where?
Luke: I don't have any.
Spock: Then we have encountered a logistical difficulty.
Luke: You're telling me your machine can turn energy into matter, but you can't make blue milk?
Spock: I am telling you that your inability to provide the necessary data is not a technological deficiency on my part.
Luke: Fair enough.
Spock: Observe.
Spock enters a command.
Replicator: Please specify item.
Spock: Earl Grey tea. Hot.
The replicator hums. A cup appears.
Luke: Whoa.
Spock: It is tea.
Luke: It just appeared.
Spock: Yes.
Luke: So you don't have kitchens?
Spock: We have kitchens.
Luke: Why?
Spock: Some foods are unsuitable for replication.
Luke: Like?
Spock: Certain complex biological substances. Some fresh ingredients. And, occasionally, food prepared by individuals who insist that replicated cuisine lacks authenticity.
Luke: Does it taste the same?
Spock: Functionally.
Luke: Functionally?
Spock: Nutritionally and chemically, it is sufficiently similar.
Luke: That's not what I asked.
Spock: I am aware.
Luke: Does it taste the same?
Spock: ...No.
Luke: Aha!
Spock: The difference is extremely subtle.
Luke: So even the future can't defeat a picky chef.
Spock: Apparently not.
Luke: Can I try it?
Spock: You may.
Luke takes the cup.
Luke: This is actually pretty good.
Spock: I am pleased.
Luke: Can it make hot chocolate?
Spock: Yes.
Luke: Pizza?
Spock: Yes.
Luke: Cake?
Spock: Yes.
Luke: A lightsaber?
Spock: No.
Luke: You really don't want me to have one.
Spock: Correct.
Luke: Why?
Spock: Because I have observed you using one.
Luke: And?
Spock: You swing it dangerously close to your own limbs.
Luke: That's part of the technique.
Spock: It appears indistinguishable from poor judgment.
Luke: You know, for someone who's supposed to be logical, you're surprisingly insulting.
Spock: I was merely making an observation.
Luke: That's what makes it worse.
Spock: Fascinating.
Luke: Don't say "fascinating."
Spock: Why?
Luke: Because every time you say it, I feel like I'm being studied.
Spock: You are.
Luke: ...
Spock: Would you like another cup of tea?
Luke: Yes.
Spock: Earl Grey?
Luke: Blue milk.
Spock: That is not currently available.
Luke: Yet.
Spock: Yet.
Spock pauses.
Spock: I suspect this tour may become unnecessarily complicated.
Luke: I'm beginning to enjoy it.
Spock: That is unfortunate.
