Digital piracy is a complex issue with no simple consensus; it is widely debated between those who view it as a violation of creators' rights and others who see it as a necessary response to corporate practices, inaccessible media, and the loss of true consumer ownership

Arguments Supporting Piracy
Accessibility and Availability: Many consumers and researchers highlight that piracy often acts as a service problem. When content is restricted by region, censored, or not available for legal purchase, piracy serves as the only option to access or verify the quality of media

Digital Ownership and Preservation: There is a growing sentiment that because digital media is often licensed rather than owned—meaning corporations can remotely delete, alter, or remove content—piracy helps consumers preserve culture and maintain autonomy over the media they "bought".

"Try Before You Buy": Many communities argue that piracy acts as an extended demo. Studies have suggested that some pirates use unauthorized downloads to test a product and go on to purchase it if they enjoy the experience

Arguments Against Piracy
Economic Harm to Creators: Organizations like and the assert that piracy negatively impacts the creative industries by depriving creators, artists, and developers of deserved wages and revenue

Unfair to Independent Creators: There is a strong consensus among users that pirating content from indie developers, small-time authors, or independent musicians is deeply unethical, as these creators rely heavily on direct sales to sustain their work.

Security and Ethical Risks: Piracy platforms frequently feature intrusive advertising and can expose users to malware, ransomware, or scams, with some illegal streaming networks even tied to illicit funding streams.

In my opinion piracy is a way for us to access content that can no longer be accessed legally due to rights holders just not releasing anywhere. I also do think that we should support creators if we can (especially independent creators)
