Metro Manila will have to wait until August next year to feel the effects of flood control projects being undertaken by the government.
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Undersecretary Abigail Valte said that while most of the projects are already finished, some interventions being undertaken by Department of Public Works and Highways have yet to be completed.
"We are pursuing the tactics on all fronts.... hindi lang magawa agad dahil magko-cause ng traffic, so we have to coordinate with the MMDA [Metro Manila Development Authority]. Ginagawa ito unti-unti," Valte told reporters.
She added that the governments P5-billion flood control master plan for Metro Manila will only be completed by 2015.
"Ang target date po ng completion for all, sinasabi po ni Secretary Singson, by August of next year, mararamdaman na raw po natin yung luwag," she said.
Metro Manilas flooding woes were again highlighted last week after heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm Mario and an enhanced southwest monsoon.
In 2012, the government embarked on an ambitious P407-billion flood control project which will take over two decades to complete. The P5 billion earmarked for Metro Manila and nearby areas is only a part of the projects initial implementation.
DAP projects wont be abandoned
Malacanang said that flood control projects supposed to be funded by the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) would not be abandoned by the government.
The DAP was declared partially unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in July.
Valte said the DPWH is finding other sources for the projects that were supposedly funded by the DAP.
"Yung iba po, sinisikap ng DPWH na ilagay sa proposed budget nila for 2015," the Palace official said.
