What, Why and How
A DDoS attack means numerous illegal computers access an Internet server at the same time and the huge incoming traffic
flooding makes the server unable to response legal users.
What is Anti DDoS software?
Anti DDoS software is software components installed on Internet servers to stop DDoS attacks. Anti DDoS software works on
different network layers to detect illegal network traffic and mitigate attacks. Since it is software, it is flexible and more configurable.
Why use Anti DDoS software?
It is because Internet servers need additional shield on top of CDN DDoS protection. CDNs are effective at huge attacks aimed at
physical layer. However, when DDoS attacks come to application layer, Anti DDoS software does better job. Through Anti DDoS
software, network flows can be easily managed and TCP connections are under controlled. In addition to that, Anti DDoS software is
usually cost saving.
What is an application layer (L7) DDoS attack?
An application layer DDoS attack is launched by multiple clients targeting a server's TCP/IP application layer. The idea is to
consume servers' TCP/IP resources with excessive TCP connections at little cost. Since for each Internet server there is a number
limit for concurrent TCP connections, clients can send many TCP connection requests to overcome a server's TCP connection
threshold with none ever being completed. It is like too many faked customers come to a restaurant without ordering food. They just
sit there and wait. Therefore, no real customers can be served. Attackers' goal can be achieved with low volume by only a small
number of client computers. For these reasons, application layer DDoS attack is efficient, cost saving and hard to be detected. The
application layer DDoS attacks can also be called layer 7 (L7) attacks.
How to prevent application layer (L7) DDoS attacks?
Anti DDoS Guardian defeats application layer (L7) DDoS attacks by limiting each client's TCP concurrent connection number. If one
client tries to access a server with excessive TCP connections, the client will be blocked.
