OPM was coined by Danny Javier of APO Hiking Society, originallly referred only to pop ballads during the 70s and 80s pero ngayon, lahat ng gawa ng local artists natin is considered as OPM
When I think of OPM kasi, ito yung mga kanta ng ASIN, Sampaguita o kaya ni Freddie Aguilar na maririnig mo yung influence ng filipino folk music kahit na influenced sila ng ibang genre like blues or rock... O kaya naman yung Manila Sounds ng APO Hiking Society, VST Company, o kaya Boyfriends na fusion ng disco, folk music/soft rock at siyempre, super melodic
Now... I love Eraserheads, pero Eraserheads is nowhere near the sound of what I considered as OPM - pero they are OPM, lumaki akong nakikinig sa Eraserheads, ang tawag pa nga nila sa mga kanta ng Eraserheads, Yano o kaya naman teeth ay tunog kalye.... pero not the OPM that Danny Javier meant.
Up Dharma Down, yung album nilang Capacities, pinaka fav local album ko - still considered as OPM kahit na yung main influence nito ay 80s synth pop from US.
Okaya naman si Hev Abi, yung kanta niyang WELCOME2DTQ parang straight out of ASAP Rocky's Live. Love. ASAP mixtape at wala ngang halong OPM influence - heck even "Pinoy Rap" pero it's still considered as OPM
Musically, nawalan na ng distinctive characteristic yung OPM kasi ginawa na siyang umbrella term para sa lahat ng music na gawa ng artists natin, so kung ganun, dapat pa bang iconsider as genre ang OPM o dapat category na lang ito?
wala akong pinaglalaban hahaha, gusto ko lang malaman thoughts niyo about this
