Sometimes, it takes somebody from another country to remind us that we have so much to be thankful for.
Kyle Jennermann, a 26-year-old Canadian national who has been living in Cagayan de Oro City for the past five months, is so in love with Philippine culture that he wants to be Filipino. His story was recently featured on Bandila.
In his website, BecomingFilipino.com, Jennermann declared in a video, "I want to be in the Philippines. I want to live here. I am happy here."
Jennermann used to work as a consultant for a Hong Kong-based outdoor adventure company, a job which took him to 30 countries. However, he says that out of all the cultures he's immersed himself in, it was Pinoy culture that really won his heart.
Jennermann first visited the Philippine in 2013. He was one of those volunteered in the rescue and recovery work in areas hit by Typhoon Yolanda. Then, earlier this year, Jennermann decided to live in Cagayan de Oro City.
When asked what he admired about Pinoys, Jennermann asnswered, "Regardless of what your status in life is or how you've been affected, you still work so hard even when things are really tough. You're resilient and are still able to share positive things with others."
So far, Jennermann tasted all the recommended Filipino food such as balut and done all the so-called quintessential Filipino activities such as learning how to dance the tinikling and riding a carabao. He is also learning to speak the language. His friends in Cagayan de Oro have given him the nickname, "Kulas."
Although a lot of people have told Jennermann that the easier way for him to become Filipino would be by marrying a Pinay. However, Jennerman says he doesn't want to take shortcuts. "I just love this culture so much," he said again.
